Boat Scammers on Craig's List

I am in the market for a bigger boat and came across what I thought was a too good to be true boat for sale, so I decided to contact the seller and sure enough it was a scam.
Below is the correspondence between the seller and my self, I have no love for these kinds of low life's.

Here is the correspondences between the 2 of us, I will not mention names.

Me) Hi, I'm enquiring about the 282 Grady you have for sale, do you have any more pics and I can't tell from the pics but are those 4 stroke engines?

Seller response) Hello there , can u please leave your email here and I will send the info and pictures about my Grady White, thank you.

Ok, my email was included when I inquired about the boat. The seller was also advertising he lived in New Haven CT.

Sellers second response )
Thanks for being interested in my 2003 Grady-White 282 Sailfish. Boat is powered with a pair Yamaha 225 hp 4 stroke motor with only 377/378 hours!. This motor starts at the turn of a key and runs out great ( 190-195 PSI in all cylinders ). Boat is in turn key condition, it has three New batteries. Upholstery is in good shape. The floor is solid all through the hull,Gauges work, electronics have been tested and works good. The boat is in great shape and runs excellent. The price is $18,000. I have tried to sell it at a higher price but we are in a bit of a rush since my wife got a new job and signed a contract for 2 years in Edmonton, Canada. She is already there and I will leave in a week or so. We don't have the conditions to keep it there and we need the money in this period of transition so I am trying to sell this as soon as possible. If you have any questions or need any info or photos please ask. Thank you.

Ok, so now the red flag goes up, just looking at how this was worded got me suspicious so I pushed for more info.

Me) Where do you live and when can I come see the boat.

Sellers next response )

I have attached some pics with the boat for you. As I told your son in my first email, I will leave in a week or 2 to Canada, where my wife got a new job. Because of the short time that I have left and so many things to deal with concerning our departure I have signed a contract with eBay to take care of the selling on my behalf. The boat is already at the shipping company in Miami, FL sealed and ready for the shipping. The total money you have to pay would be $18,000.00 Due to the fact that this is a large transaction I would like it to be handled by eBay`s Escrow Protection Program which allows you to get the boat first, benefit of a 5 days inspection time period and then I will get the payment. SO...ONLY AFTER you receive the boat and you inspect it, eBay will release the payment to me, in this way we are both protected. If you are a serious buyer and still interested in this boat please reply with your full name (for the bill of sale), a delivery address and a phone # where you can be reached and I will forward them to eBay and they will send you the invoice with all of the transaction details. Thanks

I responded with, thank you for the lovely pics of your boat, I didn't know that New Haven CT was part of Florida. I have a boat that I'm am interested here in CT. hence the Craig's search listing was for Eastern CT. so have a nice day and good luck with that sale.

From eBay's website Alert:
Internet Vehicle Scams on Craigslist and Other Non-eBay Sites eBay's Vehicle Purchase Protection covers only certain vehicle transactions that are completed ON eBay.com. If a Craigslist or non-eBay seller 'promises' you the eBay protection plan, this is fraud and you should walk away. Learn more. Common warning signs: Vehicles advertised well below what it is worth may be tempting, but should be a red flag. If it appears too good to be true, it probably is. You are unable to see the vehicle in person first or have it physically inspected prior to payment There is an urgency to complete the sale quickly because the seller has a health or family issue, is being deployed to the military, moving out of state/country or is going through a divorce/marriage Seller pushes to get money in advance and transferred through a fast payment method, or sent to a fake escrow account to avoid you as the buyer losing out on the deal before another buyer purchases the item first Criminals want to lure you into feeling safe and may also disguise their websites or emails to look like they are from eBay, when they are not. I knew it was too good to be true so I reported him, not sure what good it will do. Below is the ad in Craig’s list.

BTW, the 2003/4 6-cylinder 4-stroke 225 Yammies have a real problem with corrosion of the exhaust manifold. Many owners are furious Yamaha never had a recall for that...

I know about that, my buddy use to work for Spellman's Marina, he told me to make sure that any 4 strokes from 2003 on up to 2007 had the exhaust manifold swap out if not steer clear, they are not cheap to have swapped out.

Yes but at $17.999 you could have well afforded it. :) Sorry i just had to. yeah the world is full of skumbags waiting to prey on the innocent.

Be more careful with any emails that come into the email address you provided them, I wouldn't be surprised if you start getting more junk/spam/phishing emails now that they now it's valid address.

It's a scam. I have seen the same thing done with an RV. When I asked for a copy of the registration it could not be provided. This type of scam is commonplace on craigslist. If it's not local that you can drive to see it and get complete documentation forget it.

The email address I used was a gmail address that I setup for just this type of inquirers, it gets hundreds of spam messages a week, I would never give out my real email address, people don't realize that their email address has been pawned until it's too late.
You can check your email here.

Jay - thanks for sharing your story here and also on my Youtube vid (it's John H). I think the other crazy thing about these scams is the level of sophistication associated with some of them. Besides the "too good to be true" pricing, they are now creating fake "review" sites with scores of positive reviews related to these frauds (more specifically, the "consignors"). Bottom line, if you physically can't see and inspect the item (boat, car, rv, etc.), be wary; be very wary!

Thanks John, it was only after I saw your video on youtube that I felt this deal was too good to be true, He was advertising the boat In Rhode Island 3 weeks ago for 25k, than I saw it posted in Ct. for 18k, so I figured I give it a shot because the deal looked to good to be true, he was testing the waters for sure, I also filed a complaint on Craig's list, but I doubt they will do anything about it.
By the way, did you get your Motor Fixed?
Jay

I went through the same basic thing while looking for a pick up truck last winter on Craigslist. Same basic premise...too good to be true, eBay selling and holding the item. Took all of ten minutes of google to find out it was a scam. Have to imagine they are successful 1/10000 times. Such a shame...although I did eventually find my truck on CL.

Back in business thankfully and just finished 5 straight charters (Wednesday to Sunday). Back at my 9 to 5 today :)

Not that you can’t find a legit boat on Craigslist but there are other boating /fishing forums that have classified sections . You may know or belong to them already but one is THT(Hull Truth), I found my boat on there . There are scammers on there also but it’s smaller than Craigslist and can be moderated better. Usually the scams are for fishing gear . Good luck finding your new boat

It's getting so easy to spot these scam boats on craigslist, so far I have had 15 people contact me, thanking me for posting about the boats I have found.
Here is another, it was listed 27 days ago, a boat like this and at the listing price wouldn't last five minutes let alone 27 days.

Jay, 7 or 8 years ago, that’s a normal deal on a then 20 year old boat....my presumption is someone who hasn’t boat shopped in a while gets suckered into this every day and that’s why these scammers keep doing what they’re doing....
