Bucktail Bass

I've decided to avoid bait as much as possible this season especially with the absurd prices these days.
Left the dock with no bait and planned to target structure around Breezy Point with plain ol' bucktails.
I try to stick with 1 oz or less to keep it low profile and crawl it slow over the structure.

Needless to say I had some success employing this method.
Once the tide started cranking the bite dissipated, and we left for the dock

Nice fish.
I cannot see but also consider a trailer. Either a split tail from fat cow or similar, or a 6-8 inch white grub. In the bay 1/2-3/4 for shallow water, faster, closer to the inlet 1 1/4 oz. Suffix 832 20Lb running line, flouro leader 30-40lb. 50lb if bigger fish or bluefish around. Rarely bring "bait" anymore - but will not pass up a school of bunker! :)

Haven't bought bait either except for a pail or two of clam bellies since 2005 when I started kayak fishing. Definitely use live snappers or any "donated" peanuts though, but on a setup heavier than my 6' slimwave with a 20lb fluoro leader and 14lb braid. Nice catch ! Might try the beach again next week before I start getting my feet wet kayaking.

I was using an ottertail bait strip.
