Captain John Paduano and Snap Jigging

I like to go fishing with the kids. (not really kids anymore). While at the Ward Melville fishing show, I met Captain John Paduano. He gave an interesting talk on snap jigging. I believe you constantly must keep learning an evolving as a fisherman. Otherwise you do the same old, same old and get stale.

I send John an email ([email protected]) and asked to for info old how to set up a charter. We discussed a lot of info and decided on July 5th at Montauk.

Captain John has something he perfected snap jigging. Basically, you cast out, let a small bucktail hit bottom, then snap the rod back (very hard). Let it back with no line slack. (Captain John has a YouTube video if you are interested). Son of a gun. It was amazing. Captain John would mark fish on his Garmin, cast and nail it more than 33% of the time (or more).

My son nailed the most stripers. But here is the amazing part, we also caught
  • big knot head black sea bass,
  • fluke,
  • big porgy’s (the size of a dinner plate),
  • blue fish
  • and of course, sea robins.
Snap jigging works on basically everything. Captain John sent a lot of time individually teaching each member of my family the technique.

While on that topic, he ties his own bucktails. He uses feathers and not hair. He claims it makes all the difference. That feathers I noticed do have a different look in the water. He uses nothing on the bucktail, no pork rinds, which he claims will not work correctly with snap jigging. So that saves money. The guy really was catching fish at will.

All in all, an educationally day! For those that care, the boat was a 25 foot Parker. It didn’t pound and the ride was very dry. I purchased a few of his bucktails and can’t wait to try them in my neck of the woods (Port Jeff, Mount Sinai).

For those who care, I am posting this because I had a great time and so did the kids. My wife, who didn't want to come had the time of her life. I am not friends with Captain John, nor am I receiving and sort of compensation. I just thought someone considering taking out the family might not have any idea where to start.
