Captain Tony here, with the word on the water in and around the city. The fall run is on, and it's a good one. From the Battery up to Haverstraw, the fishing has been solid. The water is cooling down, and the bass are active.

The Harbor Hotspots

The action has been concentrated around the areas with the most bait. The East River has been holding a lot of fish, and the bite has been good on both the day and night tides. The usual spots around the bridges and piers are producing, but you have to be willing to move around to find the fish.

Down in the lower harbor, from Coney Island to the Rockaways, the bass are blitzing on bunker and sand eels. It's a classic fall scene, with birds diving and fish breaking the surface. You can get in on the action from both the beach and the boat. If you're throwing flies, a 7-inch Sand Eel Candy is the ticket. For the spin guys, a white Yo-Zuri popper is getting a lot of attention.

The Squid Situation

Just like in the Sound, we're seeing a ton of squid in the harbors, especially around the docks. And the big bass are on them. We're talking about fish in the 20-pound class, and they are aggressive. If you can get your hands on some pink and orange squid jigs, you'll be in business. The bite has been best at night, under the lights.

Tony's Take

This is the time of year to be on the water. The fishing is as good as it gets in the city. The bass are here, they're feeding, and they're big. It's a great time to be an angler in NYC. So get out there and make it happen. And remember, be safe out there. The water is getting cold.
