Captain's Table - Bottom Bonanza

Well-Known Angler
Yesterday’s superb weather and excellent sea conditions set the stage for an excellent day of bottom fishing in the eastern LI Sound. On board were Vinnie, his friend Jason, along with Frank Jr. and Frank Sr. (aka ‘the Legend’).

Headed north of Plum I. for some drifting in about 65=80’ of water and found plenty of action with many small Sea Bass and a handful of decent sized keeper Porgies. Vinnie dim manage to box a couple of 16.5” Biscuits before the tide backed off and it was time to hit my very reliable deeper drop. Once the anchor took hold and the ebb tide began to slow the action became fast and furious. Sea Bass and Progies were flying over the rail almost too fast to count. Sure, we did do a lot of sorting on the Sea Bass but with plenty of patience a number of healthy 17-17.5” fish began to find the box. As the tide slowed to sick the bite got even more intense and at one point all four anglers were engaged with double headers simultaneously!

By the time the flood tide started to move us off the piece of bottom the tally in the box was a healthy 16 keeper Sea Bass and another 18 really beautiful Scup to over 2.5#. To escape the building tide, we moved further east to one of my drops near Fishers and the action picked up pretty much where we left it for about an hour before we lost the tide there entirely. Only two more keeper Sea Bass made the team but at least another a dozen more b g Scup also made their way into the box. A copula of short Fluke and eve a small Bluefish also attacked the guy’s batis during the afternoon spree.

The bite slowed a bit while I was cleaning fish but started to pick up again with the change in tide. No matter as it was time to head back to port with a really nice box full of the best eating fish our local waters have to offer. Many thanks to these 4 very skilled anglers who are not only a blast to fish with but really know how to put the meat in the box!
