Captain's Table - Fishers Tog

With the wind finally backing down today I was able to make our first trip to Fishers this season. Along for the ride was my loyal crew of Matt, Jenn, Mitch, and Dan.

First drop in a nice jig spot about 28’ found instant action and lots of it for almost 90 minutes. Among the many short Tog, Mitch managed to put a keeper Sea Bass in the box as did Dan a little while later. Eventually Matt found a 16.5” Tog for the box but the action reverted back to all shorts after that. So, it was time to move north.

Next drop a little deeper in 42’ and once again the short action took hold quickly. However, as the flood tide began to fade the larger fish started to chew. First Dan puts a keeper Tog in the box then Jenn adds one of her own. A few minutes later Jenn gets a solid hit and soon a fat 5.5# fish is flopping on the deck! Then Matt adds 4# fish and the keeper action became much more consistent. As we began to fill out the limit Matt manages to get his spinning rod bait down in the building ebb tide and soon, he is battling the best fish of the day, a healthy 6.5# beauty! The action continued for another hour with Mitch and Dan making nice contributions to the overall catch. The bite was still strong but the ebb began running so hard on the moon tide that 160z. sinkers were stating to scope out. Nevertheless, we already had a crew limit of healthy Tog in the box with a couple of extra for the Capt. For good measure.

With a couple of hours left to fish I moved again to another drop to escape the current, my favorite jig spot but another boat was too close to my best numbers to allow us to get on it. Hit an auxiliary piece close by and while we still had consistent action the rest of the trip it was all short Tog and Sea Bass at that point. No worries as the crew still went home with full bags of tasty filet.

Hopefully the current forecast will hold on and let us get several more trips in this week. Can’t wait for the next shot as the action appears to be building with the cooling temperatures.
