Captains Table More Tog Limits

Took full advantage of the stretch of incredible fall weather and managed to squeeze in 3 charters in the past 4 days.

On Friday with the Ken party we began the day on the last of the ebb tide on my favorite reef off CT. The bite was solid but todays results were very lopsided with many shorts and only 4 keepers to 4# for almost 2 hours work. So, we steamed east to a 70’ drop off Fishers and found similar action there but with a much-improved keeper ratio. Easily filled out the boat limit with Tog to 5.5# in another 2 hours’ time also releasing many more 15.5” fish. While I cleaned the catch, I moved into a shallower spot so the guys could play C&R with the jigs. Frank took a nice fat 5# fish on the jig inside while releasing him and many other feisty Tog.

Sunday found my long-term loyal anglers of the Sal party head back to Fishers and we began in the shallow drops first while waiting for the tide to back off a bit before moving deep. Frist 90 minutes here produced 5 keepers to 6# among many other shorts and a couple of keeper Sea Bass. Once the tide slowed down, we moved out to around 65’ and enjoyed a solid bite for the next 2 hours achieving the boat limit on this drop with similar sized keepers plus 4 more nice Sea Bass to 3.5#.

Today I had Chef Nader and my long-term friend Pete join me for some outstanding shallow water jig fishing on the CT side of the Sound. The first 90 minutes here found an absolutely torrid bite with the average sizes among the best we have seen this season. Completed our limit in just that brief time with the top fish for the celebrity Chef going 8.75# and Pete a close second with a beautiful 6.5# fish. Several other 4-5# fish made up the total catch and we started to release many other fat keepers in the 3.5-4# range. Oddly, as strong as the bite was for almost 2 hours the fish simply shut down near the end of the ebb tide here.

Since it was still early, we decided to take advantage of the slack water period on the nearby reef in 50’ of water. We closed out the trip with another non-stop flurry where we again released many 3-6# keepers among many other shorts. Finally, I finished the day with a keeper Cod just as the tide shifted us off the productive piece. Today’ s trip was easily the best of this season so far on 3 fronts. We limited in the shortest period of time, the average size of the keepers was the most consistent, and we landed the largest Tog of the year for us so far, all on a fantastic, flat calm 70-degree November day. It just doesn’t get any better than that!

Still 2 Sundays’ are open for this season, 11/15,22 and for our finale on the Thanksgiving weekend I have both Friday 11/27 and Sunday 11/29 available. Give me a call if you want to participate in what has been a really super Blackfish season on the North Fork.
