This morning I had Mike S. and his family join me for their annual fall half day trip. These folks are excellent at food preparation, especially fish, and they are confident can make anyone who has previously expressed a dislike of the taste of Bluefish a believer in the table value of this fish!
So, our plan was to fish the last 2 hours of the flood at Plum Gut to load up on their favorite Bluefish and then work the short New Moon slack period in the Sound for Sea Bass. Three-way rigs with bucktails worked their magic as Dad and his two 15-year-old boys really put the hurt on the Gators while Mom cheered the team on. In 90 minutes, the guys put a dozen serious Blues from 5-12# in the box for both the table and their smoker. The bonus this morning was young Liam’s prized 33” Striped Bass that tipped the scales at a solid 18#. A couple of other short Bass also joined the party just to keep the workout going.
The wind began to build, as promised, but I was able to get us properly positioned on my favorite Sea Bass drop for just a short 1 hour shot at the biscuits. As soon as the strong tide started backing off the Sea Bass bite took hold and the entire family pitched in to cull 7 nice keepers to 3# from about 25 total fish landed.
Hit the dock at 1 p.m. just as the SW wind began to really crank and sent the family home with full bags of fillet for many meals to come!
