Well-Known Angler
Following 3 tough trips for Sea Bass where I was beginning to doubt myself, the fish seem to have finally taken up residence in the eastern Sound.
Yesterday I had repeat customers Mike B. and his family join me to celebrate daughter Kennedy’s 12th birthday. We started off just north of Plum on some of the 60-70’ drops more easily fished when the tide is still running hard. Usually these drops have plenty of Scup but mainly short Sea Bass. However, within the first 15 minutes the “birthday girl” gets a nice hit and wrestles a 16” keeper to the surface. Several more Porgies are caught then her older sister grabs a fat 18” biscuit. Things are looking up! As the tide backs down, we head off to my favorite 90-100’ drops and sure enough the Sea Bass have finally arrived. Over the next 90 minutes they caught numerous double headers and filled out their limit of tasty Sea Bass to 3#.
Today I ran a solo trip since we have a big family BBQ scheduled for Friday and my traditional contribution to the party is always something fresh from the sea. Once again, the Sea Bass were very accommodating and I had no trouble boxing my limit of fat fish to 3.5# while playing C&R for about another hour. Spent about 45 minutes of the flood in the Gut hoping to add a Striper but it was Bluefish city once again on the daytime bite. Wanting to add a little variety to our table I ran back into the Peconic’s where the very reliable Weakfish bite continues. Made only one 15-minute drift and landed 3 Weaks to 3.5# in the mid-day heat, orl.
Looking forward to this Saturday’s charter as it will be our first trip to Montauk this season. Word Is the Fluke fishing is also on the uptick so expectations are high.
Tight lines and stay cool during the current heat wave!
