Friday’s chilly start set the stage for my last Sea Bass half day charter for this season. Jane and her family make the Columbus Day weekend an annual event and the fish are usually pretty hungry. Yesterday was no exception as over 50 Sea Bass hit the deck on a CT deep drop but only 8 keepers were able to make the journey back to their dinner table. However, we also filled out the box with some nice sized scup, a few small blues and one surprise 4# Weakfish! And just to end on a high note the crew bent the rods for an hour in the Gut on the way home with a few extra mean 10# + Bluefish.
Wit a string of Tog charters on the books and the Northeaster bearing down on us, I was surprised I could not get any of my customers to shift their plans a bit. So, I decided last minute, to do a little exploring on my own. Anchored just a bit NW of Orient near the end of the flood and was treated to instant action. After a few quick shorts I decked the first keeper of the season a nice 16.5” fish on my 1.5 oz jig. Within the next 20 minutes I landed 2 more keepers in the 17-17.5” class and I had a limit in the first half hour. The flood tide started to push pretty hard, and I upped the jig to 2 oz and was just about to go conventional when I get a big hit and battled a beautiful 5.75# Tog to the net with my tiny spinner.
Had to switch to a conventional outfit after that but the action continued solid for the next 90 minutes, I landed 5 more keeper Tog (ORL)with 3 in the 5-5.5# class. What a pleasant surprise. Finished out the late morning hitting a few shallow drops north of Plum and had steady action there but mostly short fish.
So, the outlook for this Blackfish season looks very bright, assuming Mother Nature turns off the big fan sometime soon!
