Captain's Table - Season Finale

I completed my 2025 season yesterday with three friends hoping to score some late season Tog for the table and freezer. Mitch, his son Dan, and my long-term friend Pete were able to take advantage of one of this fall’s rare calm days for a last shot at my Fishers Island drops.

Started off in the 55’ area where we had boxed 7 nice keepers on this past Wednesday’s charter. Unfortunately, it was not a repeat as we were plagued with a constant supply of shorts with one nice 18” fish mixed in taken by Pete. Tried 2 other drops in the immediate vicinity but the flood tide still only gave up more shorts.

Finally, around noon we moved over to my favorite jig spot and although there were still plenty of shorts as the tide shifted to ebb, we began to slowly pick away at s few more keepers. Still no real quality fish as all the boxers were just at 16” or slightly above. But at least we all made a contribution or two to the overall catch So, we closed out the season with 8 keepers but still a very enjoyable day on the water with good friends, as it should always be!

Went to the marina today just before noon to do a few last minute clean up chores and it seems I arrived just in time. The staff had started turning off all the freshwater lines and I managed to convince them to give me till the end of their lunch hour to wash out my crab carts and get a few last-minute jobs complete.

While I may get in one or two more trips with a friend this year, it is time to put the boat to bed for the winter and recall the solid memories I have of many great charter trips and the terrific customers who shared the deck with me in 2025. I want to extend a hearty “Thank You” to all my angling partners and look forward to fishing with you once again in 2026. Happy Holidays to all!!

Capt. Mike
