Captain's Table - Steamy Montauk Fluke

Despite the rather toasty temperatures, today’s ocean conditions were nearly perfect for a Montauk Fluke charter. On board were 4 skilled anglers including William, Bill, Capt. Frank, and the intrepid Chef Nader.

Started off close to the point on the last hour of ebb and we quickly boated 10 Fluke but only one 20” keeper found the box before the tide slowed up giving way to lots of birds. So, we moved Southwest to my favorite south side drop and the action took off nicely. Among the many shorts on our first drift, William connects with a solid 5# fish and spirits are already running high. With the very light wind the drifts were pretty slow but moving enough for us to sustain a steady bite for the next hour with many more shorts and 3 more keepers in the mix.

Then the tide and wind totally dropped out and the bite turned off. So, I began to power drift and immediately we were rewarded with 3 straight keepers to 5# on the first pass. Not wanting to mess with success we spent the balance of the day power drifting similar drift lines. During that period, we found some very nice quality Fluke with 3 more 5# class fish and ultimately the day’s top fish of 7.2# landed by none other than the Chef himself! So, we managed to run the tally up to 11 keepers for the day, just one short of our limit, with some really heavy filet bags making the super smooth ride home that much more enjoyable.

Sometimes the plan does all come together nicely!!
