Had the Joe party of 4 join me today with some magnificent summer like weather for a 6-hour combo trip. Primary targets were Seas Bass and Bluefish.
On a flat Sound headed straight to my favorite CT side Sea Bass drop and the action on the end of the ebb to the change to flood was nice and steady. As usual a lot of sorting took place, but the group managed to cull 12 nice keepers to18” from about 50 fish. A few 2-2.5# Porgy were added to the mix as well.
Joe is a big Bluefish fan and usually that is one species that is very reliable on the North Fork. However, for the past week the fish seemed to have taken a hiatus as earlier prospecting trips found the fish few and far between. Based on some local intel I avoided the crowds at the Gut opting instead for a mid-Sound drop. First pass and a nice 7# Blue finds the box on a bucktail. Then, the fish mysteriously turned off. Some of my fellow charter boats were working the same area and no one seemed to be able to get a bite started. Tried a few passes in a very busy Plum Gut on the way home but there too seemed like a ghost town. I suspect once the water temps drop a little more the traditional Bluefish Blitzes will resume but it was surprising to say the least!
Can’t believe we are less than 2 weeks away from the Tog opener in the Sound. My October calendar is completely filled but dates still remain for November so it would be a good time to start setting your sights on a favorable date and give me a call before the most desirable days are taken.
A few more Porgy and Sea Bass trips are on tap for the next 2 weeks then its “all Tog, all the time”!!!
