Reel info

Okey Dokey, I like and use myself the Daiwa Tatula 150P and the Abu Garcia Revo Winch - I have the Gen4, but the Gen5 version is even nicer. Both of those feature an "around" 5.3:1 retrieve ratio. If you do a little searching (hint: Ebay) you should be able to buy the Tatula for the right price. Or you could go budget and look at the RevoX Gen5 in the 5.4:1 ratio. Its basically a previous-generation Revo Winch Gen4, which as I said, I also own and use regularly.

Try to stay under a gear ratio of 6:1 as it will help with cranking on better fish without pulling the hook.

If you want to spend more money, I can help there too. But the reels I mentioned are so nice, there's really no need to spend more - unless you want to, that is.

If you're feeling "creative" here's a thread that's worth a read-thru. It demonstrates want can be done with an "inappropriate' reel to make it a killer fluking reel. Not cheap, but the cost of happiness is an individual choice. ;)

Thank you very much
Very informative and gives me reels to check out

You know, now that I think about it, I owned one of those Black Hole 691 UL rods several seasons back. It was the spinning model and I liked it a lot. Very nice blank, though a trifle fast for my taste. Anyway, it wasn't the action that got me to sell it, rather it was that the reel seat was down-locking, with the thread above the reel, instead of below, like about 95% of all the other spinning rods out there. That works fine on an inshore baitcasting rod, because with those setups most people, including me, cup the reel during use and so there's usually not a reason to place one's hand above the reel.

In the end I just didn't care for having my hand on those uncomfortable threads, instead of soft EVA. So it had to leave my arsenal, though I really did like it overall. Very nice build quality.

Here a pair of fat offshore 5lb-ers, done in on the same early-July trip by my dear-departed BH 691UL/trusty Tsunami Evict 3000 combo. Note the custom HTLureco ball jig deep in the throat of the second fishie:
