Well-Known Angler
My family has a very long-standing tradition of bringing all our members together, even some from far out of state, to celebrate the Memorial Day weekend.
Since we are all seafood lovers, I have always made it my commitment to catch a fresh Striped Bass for our BBQ Grill as one of the special additions to a rather lengthy menu. Despite some very challenging weather conditions over the years, I have been able to keep my streak alive for well over 20 years! Fortunately, with the help of a friend, I was able to extend the streak once again with today’s effort.
After yesterday’s rather heavy NE storm and forecasts of less than favorable winds vs. tide conditions I needed an extra angler aboard to make sure that if I had to pilot the boat in such conditions at least one of us would be able to fish and help me accomplish the goal. My good friend Mitch answered the call, and we were both pleasantly surprised when the sun rose this morning with fairly light winds moving in conjunction with the ebb tide.
We spent the first 2.5 hours of the ebb working 3-way bucktail rigs at Plum Gut and the Bass fishing was rock solid. As soon as the tide gained just a little steam, we started to hook up with one of two Bass on almost every pass. About 70% of the fish caught were slot sized, and we put two healthy 30” fish in the box for our personal consumption. We also landed a couple of 33-35” oversized fish as well as a few short Bass. Final tally for the morning was 23 Bass landed, and we left them biting!
I cannot stress enough that if you really like this technique for catching Stiped Bass May and June are the 2 best months to book a trip with me on the North Fork. Best of all is we can usually get our Bass limit fairly quickly and include a second target species like Weakfish or Fluke on the same trip. I still have some weekdays in June open but only the last weekend is left if you want to take advantage of this excellent spring fishery.
