Captain's Table - They're Back!

The Striped Bass at Plum Gut, I mean.

Todays' plan was to replace an aging Washdown Pump and maybe test out the local Fluke scene. But I got a tip that the Bass bite has begun out east so I pushed my maintenance plan to the afternoon and headed for the Gut for the start of the flood.

First drift I notice the lure presentation wasn't quite right, so I made a sinker adjustment and sure enough on the next pass I am tight to a nice fish. After a spirited battle I slip the net under a fat 31" slot fish, first keeper Bass of the season for me! Then things got quiet for about 45 minutes until the tide started to pick up steam. As the tidal flow increased so did the consistency of the bites. Ultimately, I finished my 2-hour window today landing a total of 6 Bass all of which were really nice quality fish. Three we right in the slot size range, two were over and one was just under. The best fish this morning was a very healthy 33" fish that was both very fat and tall, easily in the upper teens to low 20# class!

So glad to be able to catch Bass again using my personal favorite method of fooling them. Are you ready, Kevin??

Thant one of the new wave of Uncle Josh on the bucktail? I bought my Jamesport Pal a whole slew of them last year when I found out they've returned from the grave!

Nice job Mike! Everything I have seen so far looks like what we had come to expect out of your neck of the woods for this time of year.

Thant one of the new wave of Uncle Josh on the bucktail? I bought my Jamesport Pal a whole slew of them last year when I found out they've returned from the grave!

"Old School Mike" has a nice ring to it! It also has some serious meaning as all my muscles ache this morning!!

As physically challenging as 3-way buck tailing can be I have already almost written off the Flutter Spoon craze. I just don't see the return on that method equaling the amount of effort required.

And don't even get me started on the "Snap Jigging" stuff. In my mind that's rotator cuff surgery waiting to happen!

Thanks for reminding me about the reappearance of the original Uncle Josh. I am determined to try a side by side with the synthetics this year.

Are they making 16+ oz snap jigs? I'd love to see someone actually try doing it in the Gut or Race with the tide moving, LOL!! I with you on this one, Amen Brother!!

How about this, I'll even drag myself down there. Find one of the "Internet Snap Jig Influencers" and invite him out for a full tide session in the Gut. We can 3-way and show that twerp how real men catch fish in a screaming tide...

Don't get me wrong, Matt. These techniques will catch Bass and some claim more effectively than other methods.

My point is how much damage do you want to do to your body? Remember it is all cumulative as the years roll on. Trust me when you reach my age you often regret some of these decisions to follow a current trend.

I firmly believe it is always wise to "fish smarter, not harder"!!

I remember trolling parachutes at the elbow all summer. Every day it was the same story. Give the rod to the customer and after a minute, they give the rod back because they were tired.

Only fished the gut a few times but I do remember losing a lot of tackle if you didn't pay attention! Lol
