Well-Known Angler
Back-to-back charters on Sunday and Monday found the Blackfish population very healthy and willing to bite for both crews enjoying a continuation of some fine fall weather.
Sunday found Sal and Frank my 20 year + veterans joined by John and Mike for a hot bite on the CT side of the Sound. The last 2.5 hours of the ebb provided non stop action for the guys with tons of sorting but enough keepers mixed in at regular intervals to keep things interesting. Although we did not see anything larger than 4.5#, the 16`-18” keepers were all nice and fat making for plenty of tasty filets. Tried a quick drop in the nearby shallows but only managed one last keeper there on a less than favorable stage of the flood. Overall, a great day with a boat limit achieved, most in the box by 10 am,
Monday, I had Pat, his son Tim and friend Chris hop aboard looking to score some of their own share of Tog. Original forecast called for a steady SW breeze and I had planned to fish the LI side but when we reached the Sound it was still pretty quiet so I figured we had at least until the change of tide before the breeze would freshen. Back to the CT side where the action was solid the day before. Started an hour earlier on the ebb so the tide we still pushing a bit but the bite we just as aggressive as Sunday. First Chris puts a nice 17” fish in the box to get things started. About 10 minutes later Tim’s rod doubles over and he is into a serios fish that is stripping drag like crazy. Tim worked the fish very carefully and soon a beautiful white chin just shy of 8# was flopping around in the net. Second largest Tog of his life for Tim! Back to a bunch of sorting with a few keepers here and there until the tide slowed a bit more. Then the keepers started chewing with more regularity. Pat nails a couple, then Chris, and even I got into the action a bit. Quality was excellent today with several 4-5# class fish. When the tide really slacked, we broke out the spinning rods and soon Pat had a nice 4# fish do a number on his jig rod. A few more nice keepers here and there as we hit the boat limit with Chris taking top honors during the jig portion of the trip with a healthy 6# fish!
The bite as well as the quality seems to be improving with each trip so keeping my fingers crossed for more decent weather ahead to help all my dedicated customers get a shot at the super North Fork Tog bite.
