Captains Table Tog Opener

With all of my weekends booked for Blackfish through mid-November, I took advantage of Wednesday's weather window to do a crew trip with my buddies Pete and Paul.

The steady NW to W wind meant we needed to cross the Sound to seek shelter and get set up on some good sticky Tog bottom. With a nice 2-hour window around the end of the flood tide we dropped the hook on a favorite piece in about 50’ of water. After a few small and keeper Sea Bass found our hooks the Tog bite really took hold. For the next 90 minutes we literally bailed the fish with a nice mix from shorts around 12-15” to plenty of fat keepers up to 6#, all caught on green crab. Our boat limit was easily achieved before the ebb tide ran too swiftly to fish with sinkers in excess of 12 oz.

Wanting to do a little shallow water jigging we next moved inshore to 15’ drop to play C&R for the next 2 hours. Although this spot has been very consistent for me over the years the bite on keeper sized fish was a little slow here today. To be sure we had plenty of bites but caught a lot of small Tog and only a couple of 4-5# fish to be released. At one-point Pete did tie into a real bruiser that he could barley hold on his spinning outfit and ultimately the fish gained its freedom finding a particularly nasty rock to hide behind. Ultimately it did not really matter as we were only having fun with the spinning tackle, while the days’ limit was already iced much earlier.

So, I found today’s results both satisfying and very encouraging for the new season.

I do still have plenty of weekdays open, including Veteran’s Day 11/11. So, now is the time to scoop up any remaining days to enjoy North Fork Toggin’ 2020 style!
