Captains Table Weekend Charters

Completed my “triple Play” of charters this past weekend with a full day trip Saturday and ¾ day outing on Sunday.

Saturday found longtime customer John and his family out for a combination species trip. After taking an easy limit of Bass in the Gut on Friday morning I thought we would enjoy similar action Saturday. However, the Bass had other ideas Despite working the same stage of the tide we only found 2 short Bass and about 8 Blues in the fog. After 2 plus frustrating hours we moved further east to the Race for the end of the flood but no more Bass could be found.

Ran back west to the north side of Plum for the slack and caught at a number of Scup but only smaller Sea Bass which have also been picky during the strong full moon tides this week. Wound up finishing the trip back in the Peconic’s where we finally found a little action, boating 2 keeper Fluke to 21” and a couple of 3# Weakfish. Easily the toughest trip John has experienced with me over the last 10 years but he understands no one can make the fish eat on command!

So, I spoke with a few friends who had a similar experience on Sat and learned that it seemed the Bass decided to change their feeding pattern to the Ebb tide. I called my Sunday party and we adjusted our trip to an afternoon slot instead. The Mike party are experienced guys who know how to work the 3-way rigs very well and we had hoped the winds would allow us to hit the Gut first then follow a back-up plan at the Race. However, the rather breezy conditions kept building through the afternoon hours which meant the only logical plan was to tough things out in Plum Gut.

Although the Bass bite was marginally better with 5 fish landed, we still saw no keepers, However, part of that result was obviously due to the huge influx of Blues which wouldn’t allow anything else to get to the bucktails. Still, the guys had a smoker at home and had a great time battling the feisty Bluefish 2 or 3 at a time, with a few drifts finding all 4 anglers hooked up at once. The crew really needed their “deck dancing shoes” to avoid the many tangles large streaking Blues can create. Final tally for the 3-hour blitz was in excess of 40 Blues to 10#.

Forecast looks a bit breezy for the next week which is frustrating me as I do want to start my summer Montauk Fluke trips ASAP. In the meantime, I am confident the local Sea Bass fishing will take off this week with the waning moon.

Currently I have one weekend left in July, 7/24,25 for those who cannot fish weekdays. Despite the current and coming heat waves, a day on the water at this time is just the prescription for keeping cool and having fun.

Give me a shout if you want to get out.
