Captains Table Weekend Sea Bass

This weekend’s charters featured back-to-back visits to “Sea Bass Central” in the eastern LI Sound.

Saturday found lifelong friends, John and Rich, drive all the way to Greenport from Roscoe, NY and put down their freshwater gear to pick up some medium weight saltwater tackle. The guy’s long drive was rewarded with a picture-perfect day, mild temperatures, light winds, and some very hungry biscuits! Drifting around some favorite deep drops north of Plum Island produced a steady bite that produced a limit catch of tasty Sea Bass to 3 # plus a few Scup and the occasional Bluefish thrown in for good measure.

Sunday, I had repeat customers Chris, Alex, Rob and Dan along planning to do some serious damage to the Sea Bass population and fill their own freezers. Although the skies were clear and temps mild, the wind machine turned on real early and by the time we turned the corner at the Orient Light we were greeted with a sea of white caps and rolling 3-4’ waves. As we reached my favorite location and idled the engine, I saw the boat flying along at over 3 kts!! No choice but to drop the hook and ride out the waves. At least we had the wind and tide working together for the first 2 hours of this morning’s trip. Merely standing up straight on deck was a challenge but it did not deter this experienced crew one bit. They went to work immediately on a very steady bite and by the time the tide started to shift to the flood we had reach our 4-man limit of Sea Bass to 3# and put a few extra fish in the box for the Captain’s share as well. Once again, a nice shot of Scup joined the party along with a couple of Blues. Good thing the fish bit well before the flood tide started opposing the NW wind, which made things even nastier on the ride back to port, at least until we passed Plum Gut which was particularly “spirited” today!

Although the daytime and water surface temps are still mild, the nights are definitely getting cooler and I can hear those Tog calling me. If you hear those voices too it would be a good time to call and book a Blackfish trip while there are still a few prime dates available.
