Well-Known Angler
It has been a jam-packed week aboard the Captain’s Table and thankfully the fish have been extremely cooperative on all trips.
Starting last Wednesday, the Tony party of 5 came out on a kind of dreary rainy day with the persistent showers coming down most of the trip. However, that did not dampen their spirit or ability to fill their coolers with nice fat Porgies, mostly in the medium size range with a few jumbos mixed in. These guys wanted maximum production and the Peconic Bay drops I favor delivered full limit coolers for all anglers.
Friday saw the James party of 4 looking for a multispecies trip so we started with the very reliable Striper fishing in the Gut. Many more Blues have now infiltrated the local waters but the guys were still able to catch 6 Bass with 2 very nice slot fish in the 30-33” range and also having to return 2 very nice fish approaching 40”, each over the 20# mark. Although a few less Bass filets there is no doubt that catching a Bass like those over slot fish is always exciting for my clients.
Next stop was north of Plum for our first crack as Sea Bass. Initial drop yielded only 2 keepers and a bunch of shorts. So, we shifted a little further north and found a better pile of keeper sized fish nailing 8 more for the box up to 19”. Finished the day drifting the ebb tide inside Orient harbor and the numbers of Fluke have improved nicely here. Fluke were landed on almost every drift and the guys managed to cull 8 keepers to 22” out of 16 fish total.
Yesterday found my long-term customer John, his son in law Ricky and grandson Daniel on board for another multispecies trip. Same plan as Friday worked once again with just s few changes to the overall numbers. John landed a nice 32” slot Bass on the first pass but then the Blues started to take over. I noticed the natural drift speed was a little slow so I began to power drift and we started to nail Stripers with much more regularity. First Ricky comes up with a real fat 34” fish, very close to the 20# mark, then on successive passes we caught 9 more Bass with 2 in the slot size for a full boat limit plus several more Blues.
Moved north to the Sea Bass grounds and the Saturday boat traffic kept the overall catch down a little. Still, we managed 5 nice keepers to 19” among about 20 more shorts. Back to the bay to finish up with Fluke and found about the same keeper ratio as Friday with half of the Fluke landed reaching the 18.5”-20” mark. So, the day was capped off with 5 Fluke out of 11 fish on a slightly tougher drift and once again more boat traffic to make things a bit more challenging.
I only have one weekend left in July open, 7/9,10 if you want to get out. Several more dates still available in August for all those who like to try the long-range Montauk Fluke grounds for a trophy fish.
Just give me a call if you want to get out.
