Captains Table - What's for Dinner?

Took advantage of yesterday’s super calm conditions to try and find a keeper Bass for the dinner table. I headed out to the Gut for the second half of the flood tide and literally 30 seconds into my first drift a nice Bass smacks my bucktail and after a very spirited battle a really fat 33” fish was headed to the box!

So, five minutes into my day I was already into the C&R section of the trip. Fish were a little picky for about the next 45 minutes then started to chew again. I got myself on a good drift line and nailed 3 in a row with the top fish being an over slot 38” thick shouldered beauty that tipped the scale at 28# just prior to release. Great feeling watching that fish swim away aggressively.

As the bite slowed towards the end of the tide, I made a slight shift and again found a small patch putting 3 more shorts in the boat. So, a total of 7 Bass for a little under a 3-hour solo effort; 2 in the slot today, one over and 4 shorts. A very satisfying trip indeed.

Definitely seeing more keepers now as compared to last season so if Bass is your thing June is the month. Weekend dates are gone but I still have weekdays available. Give me a call if you want to meet “Mr. Stripes” up close and personal!

Loved to fish the Gut for Bass using bucktails on a three way and some succulent pork rind or a squid strip. Nice Job way to go Capt.

Just missed you yesterday Capt. I fished the beginning of the tide & was able to put a 32" fish in the box & released one that just looked over the slot. I was floating around just west of the ferry dock about 11:30 cleaning up & taking my bobs off & saw you go by.

No worries about not meeting up. Obviously you made it happen in the Gut again yesterday.
Nicely done, John
BTW, what boat are you running? Next time out I will look for you.

I float in a 21' Steiger Miami, 200hp Yamaha, light blue hull, & oddly enough under the side cabin windows appears the name "Live Bait" Quit early the other day, had an appointment at one for a guy to come over & buy some of my old surf casting lures, as I was getting the boat back on the trailer he called to cancel, Grrrrrrrrr.

Thanks for the info, John. With the Full Moon approaching you can be sure I will be a frequent visitor to the Gut/Race. I have charters booked for next Sri, Sat, and Sun but will also be out recreationally at least once or twice as well. Can't pass up the "June Moon"!!
