Message from Capt Des about why our Mattituck season has been delayed
(Jamesport season will continue as normal thankfully!!)
Sadly, some really difficult and hateful things happened to us this winter, which is the reason why we are delayed!!
Please read when you can.....
Hello CQ family,
I hope this post finds you well and Im sorry to not have emailed sooner with an update on the season.
I wasn't sure if I should share publicly about what has occurred with our boat this winter but now that our fluke season has been delayed, many are asking what happened to the Celtic Quest IV and why did we delay our season?
Well, sometimes, really trying things happen in our lives, which test us and force us to reach within ourselves to seek understanding and acceptance of events beyond our control. This winter was one of those times for us.
The winter started out with a massive construction project on the Celtic Quest IV, one of which we had planned on for two years.
It entailed a total rebuild of a twenty five foot section of the waste / bulwark on the starboard side, an area that had become worn from the constant pounding against the dock over the years. hat alone was a big project to handle, entailing countless hours of carpentry, hundred of screws and bolts, fiberless and epoxy work, sanding, fairing and painting.
We began the project in earnest as planned and the crew rallied together, as they always do, to work hard in order to make sure we were able to complete this project in time for the season. Then, the unthinkable happened.
About a month into our project, I got a phone call from our amazing mechanic Capt Jared, telling me that something really terrible had happened to our boat!
Apparently, someone over the winter had broken into the boat and completely vandalized one of our engines and transmissions, filling them with sand, rocks and seawater.
Sadly, the damage was so extensive that we have no option but to remove the engine and transmission completely from the boat, as there was just no way to save them. After getting off the call with Jared, my heart just sank. I didn’t really know what to feel at that point. Never in all my life had I or my company had such hate directed towards us. It is a strange and sad feeling to say the least. It truly was a callous, cowardly act, exacted with complete disregard for people affected, including our customers and all those who rely on this company to support their families and children. So sad.
We called the police, who continue to investigate. To date they have not found those who did this to us. We can only hope that one day they will. In the meantime, we were left with no choice but to pick up the pieces, focus on what was in front of us and just figure out what we need to do to repair the damage and make our opening day.
