Trying to figure out WTF happened to my Keurig, a 4-year old "OfficePRO" that went bonkers on Wednesday. I made my normal 04:30 cup of coffee, but when The Admiral tried to make her 08:00 cup, the machine was unable to pump water through the K-cup, something that occasionally occurs with her brand of coffee or really old K-cups, like last year's Dunkin Hot Cocoa.

After 3 more pods failed, including one of mine, and multiple ON/OFF cycle,s I was convinced that it was the machine had gone tits up. OK, time to try the standard "Alt-Ctrl-Del" for coffee makers, a descale cycle in the hope that some dislodged scale crud had blocked something in the plumbing or valve from the heater to the coffee pod. Went through that ritual and the machine still couldn't make coffee. The Admiral had to deal with hot water from the Keurig for tea, as the machine could pump out hot water, just not pump against the resistance of a K-cup.

We spent the rest of the day trying do decide on and finding a new machine. We ending up with the WiFi enabled Keurig Supreme Plus SMART, not for the WiFi BS, but it had 6 water temperature settings, one of the most important factors for us. Our OfficePRO was able to heat the water to 198ºF, which is 6°F hotter than the "normal" Keurigs, and the new SP SMART trumped that at 202°F, so we decided to go with that. Keurig.com had that one for 50% off if you signed up for auto delivery, which I've been doing for a long time since my goto pod is tough to find anywhere else. Of course we were now faced with no coffee until mid next week, a terrible situation!!

Faced with the horrible prospect of a caffeine-free AM yesterday, I decided WTF, I'll turn on the demised Keurig and take a "sacrificial" K-cup from the selection of "I'm not drinking this type anymore", a collection constantly populated with items that falls out of favor with The Admiral. Yes, you guessed it, a miracle occurred and a cup of coffee appeared. Later in the morning The Admiral got her 2 cups and I got a few cups made over the day too, as well as the cup I'm drinking this AM.

Nope, didn't cancel the order for the new Keurig, because I'm scared that if I do that, the current machine will decide to relapse into a coma. At least it seems we may have coffee until the new one is up and running, but I'm not betting on it...

The struggle for coffee with a Kranky Keurig continues, as the new machine won't be here until Wednesday.

I managed 1/2 a cup last night and administered last rites. However, the Siren's call made me try this AM, being rewarded with 2 good cups so far. I'm sure when the Admiral arises and asks for her cup it will go tits up for the rest of the day...

Got the new coffee maker on Monday, a Keurig Supreme Plus SMART. Keurig was running a deal that was 50% off that machine if you signed up for 12 24 boxes of coffee over a year. Since the only place I can find my goto AM K-cup is Keurig and I have a regular shipment, this was a no brainer.

What I like about the machine over the old one:
  • The machine has 6 choices for brewing temperatures. The 202°F brewing temp at the "Max Hot" setting, is my favorite. Nothing worse than a cold cup of coffee, and the brewing temp of a normal Keurig is a "tepid" 192°F. The old one had a 198°F which was nice, but loving the Max Hot. There's also a setting for iced beverages at a lower temp, which works for me and my iced tea drinking.

  • There's a 12 oz setting for my "04:00 cast off time boat mug"

  • Brew intensity can be adjusted

  • Instant heating, the machine quickly heats up the water, unlike the older machines that heated up an internal reservoir which took longer for that first cup.

  • Smaller footprint, takes up less counter space

Thing I'm not fond of:
  • Keuring wants you to use WiFi and have the machine on the internet so they can monitor your coffee use, send you notifications, order coffee for you, etc. I see absolutely no personal benefit in "SMART" appliances, only home WiFi security risks, and too much marketing data to the manufacturer. Fortunately the machine can be used in manual mode, so the only "problem" is the flashing message on the screen "Time to connect your brewer" and the occasional email from Keurig espousing the virtues of being connected.
At 50% off, seems to be good value, at regular price, NFW...
