Couldn't Find Them

Didn't like the early morning tides the first part of the week on the North Fork. so decided to take the ride across the Peconic. through the canal & look for the bunker outside Shinnecock inlet. Ocean was a little lumpy with a light W/S/W wind. Took a slow ride about 7 miles east of the inlet. no birds. no bunker. no life. backtracked & went about the same distance west of the inlet with the same result. Radio chatter, everyone searching. By then the wind picked up a little with the change of the tide, & decided to head back towards the inlet & call it. I'm not a South shore inlet guy but learned today to avoid Shinnecock Inlet on a W/S/W wind & ebb tide, wasn't happy when I saw the inlet & I won't make that mistake again. Think I'll stay on the North Fork where I belong for a while.

Wise decision to stick with the North Fork fora while, John. Although the Gut and the Race are no picnic, those south shore inlets can be really treacherous on a bad wind and tide situation.

I plan on hitting the Bass ground later this week. Perhaps I will see you out there. Stay safe.

Ahhh sorry to hear that John
A falling tide with a S or SW at Shinny inlet is not fun when trying to get back in
Not as bad as Moriches but still no fun
😳
We have additional shoaling slightly south and west of Moriches. Going to be a tough summer getting in and out.

Wow that looks hairy
What about the shoaling you can’t see?
Personally I’m OK with knowing my limits and weaknesses and not going to intentionally jeopardize myself for a fish😎
I am kinda over the top irrational about planning my ocean trips around avoiding ebb tides when its S/SE/SW over 10mph👍👍

That looked like Jones Inlet a couple of years ago. I remember looking out the inlet seeing surf fishing guys standing in water about 100 feet off the Jetty and I thought they were walking on water.
Be very careful if you have a deep keel like a Downeaster because one time I ran aground in the inlet when the tide was roaring in. Terrifying !
