In 1970, I went to Hawaii with my Godfather (I called him Uncle George). He was there on 12/7/41. Originally a Master Chief on the Arizona and transferred to the Astoria not long before Pearl Harbor Day. Not thinking, I asked him to go with me to Pearl. On the memorial, he just started crying. When I asked what was wrong, he answered, "Many of my friends are down there." That was one powerful moment for both of us.

I visited the memorial about 1987. The number of Japanese tourists out there was astounding. I saw one old guy pointing around the harbor and talking in Japanese to a small crowd of fellow tourists. I hate to think that he had been there. They seemed to have no shame.

All the names on that wall. I saw the oil still leaking from the hull. I walked around the base, I had Naval Reserve ID. You can still see bullet holes left in a few buildings. It was all very moving.
