Any of you guys have any tips for me? Dad just got diagnosed Wednesday mild to moderate, which I guessed beforehand he'd be stage 3 or 4.
Going to spend time tomorrow with him to see if I can help in a different approach - he forgot his deceased wife's (mom) name of 58 years, remembered it for 20 minutes - then couldn't recall it before we ended the call.

Brutal.

Thanks guys...going to spend the afternoon with him, I know he's in there.
He'll be 89 in June...I'm lucky to have him as long as I have.

Brutal.

There's really not much you can other then to have patience with him. I went through this recently with both my Stepfather & my mother. Luckily my mother never really got to the name forgetting stage but would forget conversations & the things we talked about during the same conversation.

Forgetting medications, to eat, holidays (would ask when Easter was coming a day or two after it had just happened), things like that.

Also forgetting to pay bills. I moved pretty much all regular billings to auto payment through their bank account that could be moved.

It can get really rough.

Well, Dad is completely manic tonight. Hard to believe it's been almost 2 years since diagnosis.
Spent almost 4 hours last night with him watching the Knick game, the visit started off really slow and he picked up as he ate dinner and became more communicative.

He's been screaming Help Me! in the middle of the night and his apt neighbors are knocking on the wall to let them know he can be heard. All his vitals are good and he has a pacemaker, don't know where this will go. ?

my moms story: nearing 80 mom started loosing it, car keys were the first thing to go…
cash for round the clock care from neighborhood ladies kept safety in check… doctor stopped all meds…

4/5 years later, mom fell out of bed and fractured her hip severely… she was placed in hospice as doctor noted folks wit dementia & fractures have time limits, which was true..

i was just telling my wife, mom is gone 7.5 years, its time is vivid…

CREEP orthopedic surgeon was begging my brother to work on mom while she was hospice… she was down to 85 pounds…

it was something of a blessing she passed… made me wanna enjoy what i have remaining…

she was rejected for assisted living, guess they saw her illness… cellie…

Not a problem here, the dining room in one of the local assisted living facilities is named after him.
They'll take him should the day come.

That's the way that can help the most bud. Yes you are very lucky to have him at 89. Enjoy you're time together no matter his mood. One day at a time and do your best. He's very lucky to have someone who cares about his well being. So many older folks don't have that.

After 3 years and 6 months, Dad is in home hospice.
Won't be long, dementia is the most horrible disease of all.
