New York cancels major offshore wind energy solicitation

The state cited federal disruptions and market uncertainty in canceling its request for upward of 4,000 megawatts from offshore wind.

New York State on Friday cited "federal disruptions" and "market uncertainty" in canceling its latest and largest request for new offshore wind energy, months after several bidders had already pulled out of the process.

Nixing the solicitation puts an end, for now, to a plan that foresaw potentially thousands of new wind power arrays in deep waters off New York and New Jersey.

In a statement Friday, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, which administers the state’s clean energy programs, said it "would not be prudent" to move ahead with its prior request for proposals for upward of 4,000 megawatts for offshore wind "given the current level of uncertainty" in the nascent, and troubled, U.S. offshore wind market. The bidding closed without an award "at this time," NYSERDA said.

Actually the law puts emissions caps on most all buildings with some exceptions. The emissions coefficients used to calculate total emissions vary based on the fuel type skewed against fossil fuels . Most buildings avoid the fines by being under the emissions threshold set for the first benchmark year (2024) with a lowering of the threshold for 2030 when many buildings have to start paying fines for exceeding the emissions threshold limits.
In terms of gas, no new hook-up for Bldgs less than 7 stories starting 2023, 2027 for new buildings over 7 stories. For existing buildings you can keep using gas , keeping in mind the threshold limits and penalties.
The cost and practicality to convert many of the existing buildings can be prohibitive, especially if occupied -a lot easier said than done- many owners will just pay the fine

The average residential electric bill impact for two offshore wind farms off Long Island has increased nearly fivefold since 2019 to an anticipated $3.54 a month, according to state data, fueled by soaring construction costs and new projections for the price of wholesale energy.

When former Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo first announced Empire Wind and Sunrise Wind farms at a 2019 conference in Manhattan, the state announced the impact on average New Yorkers would be "less than a dollar per month per customer," or "approximately 73 cents."

Much has changed since then....

Don't believe the magic math about the average ratepayers. I have no idea who they think these people are. Our electric rates are going to skyrocket. Saving the world, you know.

What's really sad, is I would be willing to pay more for a real solution to carbon emissions. Much like I overpaid for a Weber grill because I thought it was made by American workers. Only to find out it was Chinese.

Kind of the same cr@p deal we're getting on big corporate wind.

Before we scrap the concept of wind power altogether, maybe there's a way to satisfy all the relevant interests?
For example, due primarily to land and off shore wind generation, Scotland generates much more power than it consumes, exporting large amounts of electricity to other parts of the UK (mainly England and Northern Ireland).
These net exports had an estimated value of £1.5 billion in 2024.

I had been given a Weber but even though it was in good shape it never cooked as evenly as a walmart I had at the time and its "bottom' is now my fish cleaning station. About half a dozen years ago one October we were in Lowes and noticed Charbroils on a half price sale. they even gave me the military discount on top of it. I should have bought two. It was (and is) $57 plus tax. I have replaced the burners, two of the three were under warranty, lol, and the transfer tubes but I no longer bother with replacing the transfers.
