Double D

Angler
Headed out of Westlake Marina at 4am aboard Double D Charters with Capt Dan at the helm along with my daughter Ally, and son Andrew, her boyfriends JJ and a few others. Perfect condition with light northern winds.

We came up on the building fleet around 5:30 am and sent the Tuna jigs down along with some Ron Zee jigs. We gave that a good half hour and saw another boat hook up and land a tuna. Capt Dan called lines up and we went a few miles further east to warmer water and found a large fleet working. Again we did the jig for a while until the arms got tired but we did see a couple of boats with tuna hanging off the sides and others hooked up.

We motored back to our original spot to find a few boats working tuna, so back to jigging. Capt then had Ally catch a whiting and brought it up slowly from 130ft. He hooked the live bait and sent it down, which took all of a minute to get noticed…..ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

We all took turns fighting the ornery fish. This was my kids first time actually turning the handle and feeling the power of a tuna. Ally was up first, and she lasted 10 minutes before handing off to JJ for another 10
Minute battle. Andrew.then got the fish close a few times but it was not happy with the boat. He eventually gave the rod to me and after another 10 minutes battle, JJ was able to sink the gaff in the 65 inch fish.

High fives lasted a few minutes and as soon as the deck was cleared, Ally brought up another whiting and back down it went to get slammed by another tuna. This fish wasn’t as ornery and only took about 15 minutes to bring it along side and under control but it was obviously over 47 inches so back it went.

We ended the day there, back at the dock @11 am, to fillet the fish. Needless to say, the kids are hooked and are really looking forward to the next chance, and talking about getting out there on our boat. I’m trying to talk them off that ledge…we shall see.

Great report!!!!

You got lucky the mate missed the head shot 3x before he finally landed one.

Did the family follow the custom of each take a bite of the still beating heart?

The one who made the gaff shot was Ally's boyfriend JJ, and it was his first ever gaff of tuna. The fish was just out of reach on his first attempt a few seconds before he got another chance and sunk it. He really thought he hit the line and lost the fish.

We did not eat the heart, but the kids were willing. They did try the gelatin marrow from cutting off the tail.

Well the kid did good for his first time. Looks like he kept focused, kept calm, and executed the task at hand!! Hats off to him.
