Electric Bicycles

I guess not so much in the north east now, but in Florida we see more & more electric bicycles, on the sidewalks & roads. The question is at what point is law enforcement going to start considering them electric motorcycles, requiring registration, inspection, & the rider to be licensed………..John

They are all over here at the beach in the summer time some of them go pretty fast. They still have pedals so I guess they are considered a bicycle

They're bicycles until the politicians figure out that by classifying them as electric motorcycles, they can be taxed to death through registration, inspection, licensing, etc.

Astoria is rife with E Bikes and Scooters; nearly all of them for food delivery. Very dangerous you never know where they’re coming from, pay no attention to one way streets, stop signs and red lights. They ride them in bike lanes, streets and sidewalk’s. Makes walking around the Neighborhood an adventure.

Electric motor= motor vehicle. I’ve seen these going faster than most anyone can peddle. They should be registered as such.

OK, it's complicated. There are 3 classes, see below. That's pretty simple. Class 1s are almost universally are NOT considered motorized vehicles and don't need registration, etc. AAMOF in Acadia National Park they were just allowed in 2019 on the carriage roads, much to the chagrin to the "Lycra Mafia", my not so endearing term for bicycle riders that like to block traffic.

Class 3 bikes are almost universally considered motorized vehicles and need to be registered, etc. It's the Class 2 bikes that vary in regulations.

The Admiral and I bought Class 1 bikes in November of 2019 and enjoy using them. They do provide exercise as measured by your heart rate if you use low levels of assist. We have 5 different settings from Zero to Turbo, but you MUST be pedaling or it doesn't push you. The pedal assist can best be described as when you were first learning how to ride and your Dad was gently pushing on the seat to keep you going.

I don’t care what they’re classified as. They need to put rules on the books and enforce them. I was in Manhattan for a meeting last week and watched an older woman almost get ran down. They drive all over the place like maniacs. On the sidewalk, on the street. Most don’t obey the traffic laws.

That’s the least of the the city’s problems though LOL.

Class 1 have the same rules as bicycles and adherence and enforcement to those rules are quite lax in many places.

Class 3 have the same rules as any powered two wheel vehicle. They should have license plates, but most don't so they fly under the radar.

The Class 2 eBikes are the "stealth" ones, being treated as Class 1 in some places, while being Class 3 in the next town over.

Haven't been in Manhattan in probably 20 years, and back then the bicycle couriers were nuts. Can't even begin to imagine them on eBikes, and IIRC, Mayor DB pushed for bicycles, so it must be an absolute nightmare there today...
