Exotic species

I haven`t personally seen them,but I heard from reliable sources of exotic species seen in the western sound.I`m talking dolphins,sea turtles,whales and mola mola.Someone at my marina in City Island said he saw a small sea turtle at the dock.This is great but I wish there were some keeper fluke to be seen.

Not unusual The Port Jeff area has had turtles, dolphins, a whale and many years ago, the old Port Jeff Ace caught a Tarpon in Smithtown Bay

I posted a video of a mola mola in the back of the Nissequogue last year. I've seen plenty of turtles also add well as dolphin.

But I too haven't seen meant fluke.

Commenting on the above, Haven't seen many fluke

Got one short fluke Sunday off Port Jeff 17 in fish B11 area

First one in a few weeks,

Other species did not cooperate much last Sunday either,

Porgies were slow, sea bass were very small, no bass or blues on the jigs

Every Summer for the last 8 or 9 I’ve seen at least 1 sea turtle out in the Middle or off Captains. Saw a bunch of dolphins the last few years as well. If they’re in there I’m curious to see what else is. Toothy critters perhaps? I must say the sheer variety of fish being caught these days is amazing compared to when I first started fishing as a kid. If someone caught a keeper bass - 36 inches - news traveled far and wide and weakfish were in the same class as Bigfoot. Sea bass were no existent except in a few areas up east. As for fluke, they died out around the same time as last year according to my records.

Many folks are oblivious to the fact that "way back when", summer fishing in the Sound was limited to Bluefish, Sand Porgies (aka Rats) and the occasional striper. Only pin hooker sharpies cashed in on market sized porgies. Never forget the first fluke I caught in the early 70s, catching it from the shore on a Hopkins. My first response was "Gee, that's a big sundial" which changed to "Holy Crap, it's a fluke!!" when it flipped over and I saw the opaque, white belly!!

When Fluke in the Sound got strong in the late 70s, my "barometer" for a good fluke season was sighting a sea turtle around Buoy 11, which happened twice, both banner years...

I was catching mackerel on every cast from the shore in the spring at the end of Throgg's Neck when I was at SUNY Maritime College. That was early 80s.

George - surprised the Mola made it in there - last time fished the Nissy it was pretty shallow even at high tide. Is there much of anything in there these days? It was pretty close to dead when I gave it up about 8 years ago. Didn't even see the usual bait fish popping out of the water near the banks.

Humpback at the Triangle off Huntington three years ago, small one that did a full breach my son caught video of in August. I've seen turtles, there were bottlenose here three weeks ago. Saw a seal this past July same area. Heard just east of here a grey seal was taking some bluefish while on the line. Can the Great Whites be far behind? lol. I thought I heard a Cobia was taken in the sound a few weeks ago. Plenty off the SS right now, that would be cool to catch.
