'EYE PROTECTION'

CELLFISH

Well-Known Angler
after many, many years of not using Sunglasses except for when I was driving the car, ( beach fishing, wintering in south Florida, back yard patio), a certain discomfort has developed in my right eye the last few years... both Ophthalmologist said all is ok but start using eye drops (dry eye ) and only said a few years ago wear Sunglasses...after understanding what the pain is from, ( eye strain ) it was from not having good eye protection... recently I said to her, I am hesitant to use $200 'MAUI JIM ' models ( great glass ) while beach fishing, but at this point my eyes are more important than $200... she did say there are less expensive models available, but i wouldnt know whats out there, any suggestions...

my wife just bought me a new model for a more wraparound eye protection than my first model, 'Island Time' it even has a bifocal reading... cellfish...

The "Admiral" wears Maui Jims, and swears by them. AAMOF, she just had a 10 year old pair start to delaminate and for $100 Maui Jim sent her a brand new pair so not a bad deal. Her eyes are very sensitive to light and glare and she has a few pairs of Maui's with different tints. Yes, they are worth it!!

I'm not as sensitive, but I have been wearing prescription Polaroid sunglasses for over 50 years now. Right now I've got Zeiss lenses and they're great too. I'm near-sighted, but correct so well with lenses I've never considered contacts. Back in my sailing days my nickname was "Bionics" since I could spot the next mark on a race course long before anyone else. Add to that the fact that most races went over my fishing grounds so I knew were rocks were and back eddies, boat owners were lining up asking me to join their crews.

I loved my rayban aviators, they had the ray ban green lenses. Only ray bans have the green I am talking about. Others have green lenses but not even close to the same. The were the best as far as blocking out sun even in lower light conditions. Unfortunately they dont make prescription lenses in that color. It is kind of close but not really. Now that I need a script I have maui jims and wish they were only 200. I get a new pair with my insurance each year, and as such i get nice frames that I like and spend the money on the lenses. Most of the name brands like rayban maui jims and okleys are all very good. just make sure they are polarized.

Personally, I'm not delicate enough and way too active for higher end sunglasses. I tend to beat the piss out of them, drop, scratch. lose, and smash 'em on a regular basis whether it be on the boat, in the yard, in the car or wherever. Cheaper polarized ones are the only option for me as I seem to go through 'em too quickly....

Chinaman, where do I start looking for less $$$ polarized shades... cellie...

You only have one set of eyes... even though I have brown eyes, I'm pretty sensitive to light, so always have sunglasses on, especially around the water where the reflective light kills me.

You don't use one fishing pole for every type of fishing do you? Of course not. I have 3 pairs of sunglasses that I use. One is my "everyday" wear, most stylish, best lenses, etc I also have a pair of "boat glasses". Less expensive, but sturdier, as I know they will take a beating. They fit my head & eyes a little better because I don't want the 45 mph wind drying out my eyes and contacts when I'm WOT! I also have a croakie on them so just in case they fall off my face, I don't lose them overboard. I also have sunglasses basically just for golf.

My every day glasses were probably about $300, but the other two were under $200. Plenty of options out there. The $25 options from Walmart are better than nothing, but really are just crap and I don't know that you will feel any real benefit.

Yes, my discomfort was worrisome, tearing, irritation, blurriness, all from not wearing protection most of my outdoor life... my Mom had a scare in her early 80's, she had 2 opinions that cancer had developed in her eye and it needed to be removed.. , Fortunately an experienced suggestion came up and she was referred to " The Wills Eye Hospital " in Philadelphia where a well known Husband and Wife team saved my Mom's eye... grateful stuff... cellie...

Maui’s are by far the best polarized lenses. But if you are trying to cut price just make sure they have a good polarization and the back of the lease have antiglare( otherwise if not a wraparound you will see the reflection of your eyes ). Ray ban, costa all good, still favor Maui Jim. Also as far as color, on the water- gray (ray ban green/grey-G15). Golfers mountain hiking- could use brown, it makes the grass greener. Obviously glass lenses are better on saltwater, but if you have any eye issues, loss of sight in one eye, then polycarbonate lenses are the better choice.

yes Joe, I may not even bother with with a Walmart Special, just be more cautious with the Maui Jims Im using... Being in South Florida over the winter months the last few years, I see how obviously damaging the Sun is, especially on cars... there are so many cars of differents styles with Sun Blistering on the paint, Its Brutal down there, even walking the parking lot... cellie...

Spoken like someone name "eyeglassjoe" would :)

I consider sunglasses part of my fishing arsenal. Therefore I have one of everything! They all have their plusses and minuses. I use my Costas when fishing, and my Maui's everywhere else.

If you hold up a cheap pair about a foot or two away from your face and look through them, then take a more expensive pair you WILL notice a difference in lenses quality. There WILL be some minor distortions with the cheap ones.

I agree with what some others have said. Your ONLY pair of eyes are worth a decent pair of glasses. If you do spend the money the better lenses are less prone to scratches than cheap ones. They will last as long as they don't go overboard.

Driving from Miami to Key West over that ( bridge?) whats its name, absolutely stunning colors and beauty, big diff with Polarized Glasses... cellfish... 8-)8-)

I have used a pair of Costas for a few years now. I do not have them in the office with me, but believe they are the Harpoon model. Very, very happy with them. I am actually looking for a second pair this year.
