Fatal Great White Shark Attack Along Maine's Midcoast

I agree with you on the law, but I don't see the tackle shops being responsible. It's up to the state, and now they have data on every saltwater angler that should be doable. They also need to use their social channels to help inform this uniformed group.

This generation is all about the photo or video. They are very conservation minded, as I've found of most anglers, and will do what's right.

I do wonder how an eco can prove what they are targeting, but it's simple to see a photo on Instagram that a person is in violation of possession. I think these these sharks are very Hardy, but the law is the law.

Can't even begin to understand how do you "target" a few specific species of sharks, when you're shark fishing, you're shark fishing. So if you catch a protected species you just have to release it as soon as possible and you're in compliance.

There is one thing you shouldn't be doing since it's pretty specific for Great Whites, and that's trolling seal cutouts, but beyond that, shark fishing is shark fishing.

peeps who target sharks are using whole bunker rather than chunk... also using 20/0 hook... cellie...

That's not illegal since you could always say your fishing for legal species like blue sharks, porbeagles, smooth hounds, etc.

The sign says "Do fish for or target prohibited species." It's absolutely unenforceable since shark fishing, chunk or whole bait, with and without chumming, is shark fishing.

Obviously da states need to be more clear for shark fishing from beach, those other species are rare for shore... “ do “., ?? cellfish...

I'm still confused. IS it illegal to fish for sharks from shore in NY?
It is legal to shark from shore. There are some that aren't protected so you can fish for them. I have seen makos and threshers for example that were brought to shore. And they were released, but they could have kept them.

I cut and pasted this from the NYS DEC website. Bull sharks are not a prohibited species. You can keep one pre day over 54 inches. If those guys kept that fish for some reason they would have broken no laws.

Prohibited Sharks: Atlantic angel, Basking, Blacknose, Bigeye sand tiger, Bigeye Sixgill, Bigeye thresher, Bignose, Bluntnose sixgill, Caribbean reef, Caribbean sharpnose, Dusky, Galapagos, Longfin mako, Narrowtooth, Night, Sand tiger, Sandbar, Sharpnose sevengill, Silky, Smalltail, Whale, White (8)

(7) Fork length means the straight-line measurement of a fish from the tip of the snout to the fork of the tail. The measurement is not made along the curve of the body.

(8) A person may fish for white sharks with rod and reel, provided the person releases such fish immediately with a minimum of injury and that such fish may not be removed from the water.

Other provisions: All landed sharks must have head, tails and fins attached. No sale allowed. No finning. Sharks, excluding spiny dogfish, shall not be taken for commercial or recreational purposes by baited hooking except with the use of non-stainless steel non-offset circle hooks. No person shall conduct, sponsor or participate in any shark tournament unless said tournament's rules and regulations require the exclusive use of non-stainless steel, non-offset circle hooks.

Maybe somebody can enlighten me about what's special about fishing for Whites that would differentiate it from fishing for any other species?

Seal teasers?

Thanks for refreshing me Mr. A,
btw Florida regs are similar, except wit new regs Florida residents need to apply for a special shark permit and non resident are not allowed at all to target sharks... cellfish...

Seal teasers?

No joke, the shark video folks make seal cutouts out of foam/wood and mount cameras in them to get video by "trolling." You could replace the camera with some BIG AZZ trebles...

I really thought I was kidding. ?

Can't find the video I was referring to. It was one where they towed a seal-shaped cutout behind a boat, with a video camera mounted on the cutout, pointing down through a hole.

However, here's something newer with a GWS attacking a robotic seal.

Bottom line either way, you could troll a seal-shaped lure behind a boat to fish for GWS...

Its all over shark week been doing it for 20 yrs

And I have to admit, because of some odd glitch I didn't see the earlier posts about species targeting.

Maybe we should do a thread about selective fishing.
