Fished with my brother............

longcast

I have not been out with my brother in a while so he agreed to get everything on and off the boat so I said let's go!

Fished around the turn yesterday and managed 30+ fish in a very short period. But it stopped on a dime once the outgoing started pulling. We managed 2 keeps, although under old laws we had 5, lol. Some decent ocean fishing in our part of the world. The bay has been barren this year with a few spurts here and there.

So the bite stops and we are a little bummed out. We did not want to fool around with small sea bass so were just about cleaned up and my brother sees a plastic 55 gallon drum drifting 100 feet or so off the port side. I catch the glimpse of a fish jumping out of the water so we decide to explore. We stop upwind and drift down on it. One triggerfish and a couple other fish I could not identify were just milling around. I decide to throw a 1/2 oz bucktail deeper in the water column and keep getting bumped with no hookup. HHMMMM. Frustrated now! So I cut up some old squid and for giggles start launching it around the boat. That did it. Now we have colorful fish ripping around the boat 10 feet down and now I can ID - Mahi!!

We quickly grab our fly rods and game on! We played with them for more than 30 minutes, hooking one and leaving in the water until the other person casted. What a blast as these buggers took to the air multiple times. Then we see a dark brown figure about 50 feet from the boat slide by and it is over. It was right under the surface but no fin sticking up?!? Could it be a cobia? We later spoke to folks at the marina and a couple people mentioned the same. I was able to get one cast in front of him but a glance was all I got with the tiny fly. Would have real if he grabbed it!! On the way back we see another dark shadow and it ended up being a juvenile hammerhead shark! He let me get pretty close and then he grew tired and dropped into the depth. Amazing amount of life, but reflecting on it, the water had the colors of a much deeper ocean.

Until the next.................
