Fishing in Gardiner NY

We are taking a multi-family trip to Gardiner NY. My wife mentioned there is a stream right behind the house we’re renting.

Questions:

I assume there must be (assuming fresh water) fish in the stream. Mostly I fish from the Long Island Sound. Any helpful freshwater hints appreciated.
am assuming I need to get a fresh water license?

Hey BoatGuy, I am no pro to freshwater fishing, but have been doing more of it in the last year just to satisfy my urge to fish when I can't get out into the Sound or Bay. Fishing license isn't bad, you can get one for the day, the week or the year so you can decide which works best for you.
Hard to know exactly what will be available to you in that creek, but I looked quickly at a map to determine those creeks in that are run out from Wallkill River, which reportedly has a lot of small mouth bass. Small mouth bass pick up on scents, so that could be an angle to take advantage of. I would probably grab a small scented soft plastic, some worms too, and maybe a rooster tail or something to have a few options. But, if you're only wishing to do this once, then I could understand not wanting to fill a tackle box with a bunch of stuff you won't use again lol. Idk how fast the creek moves but I would assume you'd be ok with some split shots for weight.

One thing I learned from the various ponds and creeks that I've wet a line in is the rooster tail lure works great for whatever is swimming around. I always used to pack an ultralight rod with a few roosters when traveling upstate or Pennsylvania.

Being able to cover ground, the rooster tail is nice to find out where the fish may be at. The vibration it sends too is attractive to fish. If you get something as the all around, lets find out what's swimming in this water, that is a good place to start, I think.

Can you buy the rooster tail lure locally near Rocky Point. Leaving soon so I can't mail order it.

I was also thinking of paddletails. What type of jig is good for the front?

Google the area and look for a tackle shop. I bet they have all the "right" colors etc., and spending money they may share some intel. I do it all the time.

Most recently that protocol put a shore bound tarpon up for me while the locals made fun of my car and clothes, lol.
