Halloween Afternoon Bass Outing

Haven't been posting much over the last 2 weeks because the bass bite has been quite slow for me. I've been out several times, inside the bay/inlet and outside mainly east. I've had a few bass on bunker pods east but with the amount of bait in the water I think it's a miracle unless you really get lucky picking your pod. Had a handful of shorts a couple days ago inside by Moses bridge plugging the skinny water by sandbars near the coast guard station etc. Did have one good morning about a week ago close to the beach using sand eel imitation lures, mostly 26 inch fish with the occasional 25lber.
Yesterday I got out with 2 friends around 1 and we headed out in beautiful conditions. The Coast Guard and Bridge area was mobbed with boats lol. Almost every piling was anchored on, at least a half dozen an anchor chumming by the bar and plenty more on the drift... no thanks, time to head outside. Started in 30ish feet of water east by the pencil with miles and miles of bunker. Found a school that looked like it was getting harassed and snagged a few. Spent about 30 minutes with nobody getting a hit. I had heard that people were finding the jig bite, which is what I want in the fall, out in deeper water. Decided to give up on the pods and run deeper and we were rewarded. Once we got to 70ish feet the bird life began and the bass were breaking on the surface chasing sand eels. They didn't want the jig but definitely wanted the sand eel imitation. We were using the Tsunami holographic sand eels and I swear by them, been using them for the last several seasons. The fish were quite spread out so no crazy action, just a lot of casting on swirls etc but every fish was quality 20-30lb class. We had our limit of really fat 35 inchers and quite a few up to 43 had to go back. Surprisingly the bite slowed down or moved off around sunset so we packed it in and back at the dock before sundown. Now we get several days of strong winds and big surf. This has been the theme this fall with storms. Hopefully the fish stay.
