Used to watch them on strafing runs at Fort Drum. Been told the same thing about the recoil effect. 30mm shells of depleted uranium do weigh a bit !

I had originally heard that the gun has 9-1/2 TONS of recoil, although the Wikipedia article says it's "only" 5 tons. It's mounted off-center in the A-10 so that the barrel that is firing is on the aircraft's center line to prevent the recoil from yawing the plane off target.

It's 30mm. I heard that when fired it slows the plane down.

Yep I stand corrected. I only saw it at the air museum in Arizona a few years back. Along with alot of other big guns. Very impressive
