Do you have your own ramp on your property?
No, the state updated one in the harbor just this year, which really sucked, but the new and improved one is poorly designed with lousy pitch and a short run of finger floats. It's only useable for boats my size at about mid-tide and higher, and all its finger floats are "dry" at even a normal low tide, so you can't launch or retrieve anything that you'll need to tie up as part of the operation. The finger can only support a launching boat and one "on deck" at high tide, it's subject to wind from most directions, and there's a strong tidal current going past it. It's only good in a pinch, and this was "a pinch".

I usually use the one in the next town over, which is the absolute best ramp I've very used in my life, replacing the old Jamesport state ramp from the number 1 spot. This ramp can be used at any tide, including extreme low tides, is totally protected from wind and tide, and has a long finger, which supports 2 boats at any tide, and as many as 4 at high tide. Unfortunately it's a 20 mile round trip by land, while the local one is 4 miles. I always use this "far away" ramp in the fall since my boatyard is a "massive" 1/2 mile from it. Keeping the number of miles with the boat on the trailer has always been my mantra, don't have the time, nor the money to keep rebuilding brakes, bearings, etc. The short runs let me get away with murder...

Thanks, right now we're out of "The Cone of Silence", ooppps, mean "The Cone of Uncertainty", but damn thing has been wobbling so I figured I'd hedge on the side of caution. With the forecast "massive" storm surge of 2' in my area, my biggest fear immediately went away as even with tomorrow's wimpy New Moon High Tide, the total height over MLW would be the same as a good spring King Tide, but at least this way I'll be able to sleep tomorrow night.

I doubt the storm will make landfall anywhere in Maine or Canada as anything more powerful then a Tropical Storm; gotta love that 63°F Gulf of Maine water temp. Local Forecasters are saying possibility of low 60 mph gusts, which is just a bad winter Nor'easter. However the trees have leaves and this summer has been one of the wettest on record, so it wouldn't be surprising to see uprooted trees, along with all the dead trees/limbs coming down. We will lose power, but "Genny" is on station and ready to go, I hope.

All the loose lawn furniture moved and tied down, so now it's a waiting game.

Here's 1 from the Shinnecock inlet web cam
Looks like the seas are starting to kick up.
As a side note, the tide is currently rising nor is it very windy so all of the white water is NOT wind against tide

So in my days of lesser responsibility, I would have at least been on that east jetty especially at this time of year. Montauk would be preferable, but Shinny East produced some great outings!
