It really makes my teeth itch when people justify breaches in the beaches with "look how clean the water is!"

It ain't gonna be clean when it's in your living room. The barrier beaches are our hurricane protection. I'm also seeing a butt-ton of stupidity with FEMA funds and "sustainability" laws that cause street ends to be raised, and your new bulkhead needs to be raised 18 inches.

Because water seeks its own what?

Meanwhile you're a foot and a half further from your deck except when that once in a decade storm event is finally happening.

Mother Nature and the weather not a damm thing we can do about it sucks but it is what it is.. And I do have to agree with @longcast the bays were much cleaner
