Got out after work yesterday on my neighbors ride. We have had very sporadic results the last few weeks as water temps climb, but since we scrapped tuesdays plans with the t-storms, we were giving it a shot with the 15-25 kts winds from the west. Greeted with 2-3 footers in the open Sound, but we motored out to the middle in 60 feet of water. Sent some chunks down as the sun dipped low with the outgoing starting to pick up. As I was cutting up some older frozen bunker to use as chum, a rod came to life, peeling out line. Rich picked it up and she went silent. That feeling of the fish spitting the hook came over us for a moment, but once again, the clicker made more noise, and he put the reel in gear..rod loaded up and we were tight to a fish. Did the rod dance on deck as I moved other lines still in the water to the other side of the boat and I grabbed the net. Fish popped up on top about 40 feet from the boat and we saw the big open mouth. Only question was is it big enough. Scooped it into the net, and brought it on board. Broke out the tape and the fish was ours at 30 inches even. We figured there was more than one fish down there. Kept the lines out for another hour and had one more quick run off that spit the hook, and a dogfish that wanted to see our boat, but that was it for the night.
