So after Saturdays BlueBird day aboard the CQ with old friends and new on Cany's Annual FusterCluck, I had to give it a go on sunday.
My wife was kind enough to go to Cow Harbor Bait and Tackle for me...again... and picked up a 1/4 bushel of crabs so we weren't delayed early in the morning. The ramp was very busy and full with everyone trying to get out and enjoy the day. We broke the inlet by 7:30 and headed out into the flat LI Sound. Dropped anchor in a familiar spot around Eaton's at 35 feet, and it was instant action with the outgoing water starting to slow down. We had a decent bite going with a number of heartbreakers that would not break the 16inch limit. The steady parade of boats flying by that headed to the other side or halfway to 11B was amazing. I thought about a run to the middle but the crazy amount of visible boats along the reef had me on the fence, but my mind was made up when Tom came tight to a mini bruiser that came in at 17 inches. Ok, we can stay. I had a huge hit on my 1 oz jig that came tight for a few cranks, and left me wondering. The good bite died as the tide went slack, and bobbing on anchor around the broken bottom kept us rebaiting with smaller fish. Finally when the water started to move again, we reset the hook and were back into fish. Rob reeled in a nice 18 incher that seemed like the highlight of the day, well besides the unreal weather that had me in a t-shirt. Tommy let out an OH BOY, this is big call...his little rod doubled over. The fight and excitement was on...easy Tom, dont horse it, rod tip up, reel down, keep pressure on it, relax, dont screw up, let her run, zzzzz...with the fish taking multiple runs back to the bottom. The fish came into view in the gin clear water and it did not like the welcoming crew so back down she went one more time. We finally slipped the net under the big fish of our season at 22.5 inches...smallest rod, smallest reel...biggest fish. Good job by T-Mac. After that, a few more oh so close heart breakers but thats all she wrote as we headed to the barn early figuring the ramps will be a circus in a little while. It became a very good idea when one motor did not want to fire off...seems like the port side 200 HPDI suddenly has no spark. She got us out there on 2 motors. Luckily it is not a long run and we were able to get on plane on lake LI Sound.
Amazing day and for sure memories...now back to figuring out whats wrong.
