Went on Saturday with John (Fish4Me), armed with @9 dozen crabs. Broke the inlet just before sunrise, and greeted to a flat LI Sound.
Cruised across to the CT side and found the water really moving with the full moon.
I gave the Celtic wreck in 50 ft of water a half hour of our time, and there was life, but it seemed like small annoying pecks, so we moved on.
Next stop was around Greens Ledge Light house and found a rocky spot in 35 ft. More life than before, with some decent shorts coming up as well as short Cbass. I did managed a single nice 18 inch keeper tog there, but after 1 1/2 hours, we moved on. Gave another spot at 25 feet a shot, and more of the same short life although a few keepers were caught around us.
With tide starting to slack, we motored to the middle around the fleet at 11B. Set up at 50 ft and instant life with a few decent sized shorts, but nothing to bring home. We stayed there until the outgoing just started to move.
Final stop of the day was on the LI side closer to the ramp at 35 feet. A few boats in this area also, and we had instant life again, with just short togs, and decent sized porgies. I was surprised to find the water moving at a decent clip here considering there wasn't much current in the middle. just a few miles away.
It took a while, but the keeper sized tog finally found our baits. I managed two more keepers barely over the 16 inch mark that liked the jigs. John stayed with the tradition rig until my second keeper came up. He switched over, and right away had his first keeper. At one point I had an absolute slob on, but she became unbuttoned, and out came the expletives!!!
As the sun and bait started to getting low, John and I hooked up at the same moment, but once again, after a good 10 seconds, my fish popped free, but John was tight. I grabbed the net while cursing the fish and my bad luck again, and slipped it under his second and final keeper of the day.
Soon after we headed back in, happy with a fantastic day on the water, amazing weather, tons of action, 5 keepers, and more memories with a great friend.
