Secured a 1/2 bushel of crabs from Cow Harbor BnT for a 2 day Togfest this weekend.
Sat, had 3 buddies on board as we left the LI side at 7:30 am. Cruised across and spot locked on a piece I found last weekend in 20 ft of water.
There was decent action, with the occasional keeper coming up, until the tide change. The dinner bell went off, and Cool Hand Luke found the honey hole.
He managed 6 keepers himself over a half hour span, while the rest of us seemed to plow the road of shorts. We called it at 11:30 with 11 keepers, 1 shy of a boat limit.
After cleaning everything up, I went back to Cow Harbor for 4 more dozen crabs for sunday, just in case.
Sunday, we had my old friend Rob and his teenage boys aboard, Robbie and Joe. To say Robbie (13 y/o) was beyond excited for his first real fishing trip, no less a tog trip is an understatement.
I used the same game plan as Saturday. Took the 15 minutes cruise across and hit the same rock pile. We had similar action as the day before with plenty of life but mostly shorts.
Took the time to teach the boys about baiting, and hook sets, all while seeing the occasional splash from Albies as well as a hunting Seal not far from us.
The excitement from them with any fish that came aboard was great, and when Joe (16 y/o) came tight to a real one, he struggled with the fish, but bested the black as I slipped the net under the first keeper of the day. A couple of pics and high fives, as soon the fish was in the live well bleeding out. Robbie followed shortly after with his own keeper, that was slightly larger.
We stayed in this spot through the tide change hoping for a repeat of saturdays flurry that never materialized.
So with another hour left in our day, we shot back across the flat calm Sound and set up in a favorite spot. The action picked right back up, and within 10 mins, Robbie had his second nice keeper, quickly followed by his third for his limit and high hook honors. Joe was having some technical difficulties with his rod, so his dad gave him his set up to hold as he tried to fix the issue. 5 seconds into the handoff, and Joe was battling what became the big fish of the day, a decent 17 .5 inch tog that was especially ornery with numerous runs back to the bottom. I was able to join the keeper party with a mini pig of the jig to help me save face with the boys.
We called it a day as we ran out of crabs, with the boys catching 5/6 keepers, as well as bragging rights over their dad, and of course memories made for a lifetime.
