Got out twice this weekend!
Saturday was a Three Amigo's trip with Fish4Me on Koz's ride along with my son for a trip out to the Middle Grounds, east of the Lighthouse. Spot lock kept us glued at 30 ft and we had instant life as the tide was near high slack. Mike started the day with a quick keeper, and "Little" Andrew had himself a good day also with a nice keeper. The tide switched but the fish didn't care. I had a maybe 16 incher that was too close to keep. Andrew then had the fish of the day with a nice 5 pounder. The porgys were rather large too, and we kept a few of those big boys. John had a nice tog as well as a keeper cbass. We ended the day with 5 keeper togs, and new memories for us. Always a pleasure to fish with the old Noreast gang.
Sunday, we broke the inlet on my ride by 7:30 and shot across the Sound to the Sheffield Area. I knew we had limited time on this side with building south winds by mid morning. Spot lock set shallow at 15 feet and within the first ten minutes we had 2 very nice togs on board, a 20 and 18 inch. The crew started rumblings about limits and getting home early, but this was not the case. The smaller blacks took over where the bigger ones used to be and after 30 minutes we motored to another close spot. The wind was starting to build and I let them know we were on borrowed time on this side as I added another keeper in the box. By 9:45 I made the call to get back across while we still could rather comfortably. After 10 minutes of some slower motoring, I was able to put her on plane and we made it back to the Eatons Neck lighthouse area. By now the wind was gusting 15-25 from the SE. We gave another shallow spot a shot for another 45 minutes, and had a decent bite going but couldn't get over the 15 inch mark, and now with the outgoing tide in full swing and wind from the opposite direction, it was getting sloppy.
So we moved again a little further east and set at 40 feet. Took a while to build the bite but the fish were there. A lot of 13-15 inch hard fighting togs that kept the rods bending and we knew the bigger fish were around. with some fish that broke off or took us into the rocks. We managed another 3 keepers from 16-19 inches, as well as some real big scup that we kept. Water temps ranged from 62-64 degrees, and the Rhodan worked well throughout the 6 hour day with gusty winds and 5 guys on board. We finished off our crabs from Cow Harbor and called it a day with a quick ride back to the ramp into the wind.
