Wrenched on the trolling motor on friday night without any luck. The steering motor housing itself was detached from the unit and no amount of creative garage engineering would make it hold up to the demands of the motor. So my neighbor who was helping offered to take his boat because he has a windlass.
We were rudely greeted to a lumpy LIS at 8am with the forecasted light and variable wind more like 15 kts from the North and 2-3 footers on the LI side. So we motored out and across slowly at 10 kts until we got to the 11B area where it was calm enough to get on plane. We settled in at the Sheffield rocks area and had plenty of company from both NY and CT boats. It took longer than it has in the past but withing the first hour, Rich had a keeper and the bite was building as the outgoing was picking up. I stayed with the jig most of the trip. At one point the wind and tide played the boat over a large boulder, and I picked up that as the jig tumbled down the structure it was getting hit hard. Drop after drop, larger fish kept picking up my crab as it reached the base of the rock. Within a half hour, we had 4 keepers come to the boat as well as a number of 15 1/2 inchers. The condition finally took us off the piece, so we reset the anchor and got back on structure to finish off our limit. Biggest fish was 17 1/2". A smooth ride across as the winds shifted southwest by the early afternoon. Back at the ramp a fellow angler was thrilled and had to share his experience with his 25 inch monster that came from 11B early in his day.
The replacement part for my spot lock has already been ordered and will hopefully arrive and get installed for the coming weekend. We are running out of time and the chances to scratch the itch is winding down.
