If you only catch two fish all morning.

Let one be 22" ... and whoever it was last year suggesting to add a pork rind trailer when a Gulp! curly tail gets bitten off, thank you. Quite challenging kayak fishing this morning as I put in at a location where the forecasted very light N. wind was in the same section as the outgoing tide. "They" never get the wind right. Even with a drift sock out I was moving faster than most people walk and paddled to a different spot a half mile away. Of course the wind continued to shift around to the east but at least the mid tide current slowed somewhat and both fish took the pink and white homemade buck with a pink Gulp and the aforementioned trailer. By the time I got the hook out and the fish on the stringer, I drifted a couple hundred yards and decided to try my luck again where I had started but after downing both bottles of water decided one fish was enough and went home to filet and hit the pool. A lot more eel grass but its that time of year. Just judging by my feet I would say the water temp was in the mid 70s.

Dealing with shifting winds and strong currents can really make or break a fishing trip. Using a drift sock is smart for managing speed, but nature's surprises always keep it interesting. Homemade bucktails with Gulp! trailers seem to be a winning combo, especially in those conditions.

I get an extra kick out of painting and dressing my own jigs and teasers. "Leprechaun" put me on to HT Lureco for the lead minnows, and I hit up Ebay for colored silicone skirt material. I hunt so I have plenty of deer tails. Leprechaun also made popular a rig for his ocean jaunts but that I have used with some success in the backbay.

White is pretty universal. Usually start with that color bucktail. So here's the scenario. You use a white bucktail with pink gulp and catch fish. Are you going to change to nuclear chicken to test a feeding theory of the day? Nope. Pink was the ticket. Or was it?

I think in my case with no “real” bait its all in the action.
