Importance of Extensive and Accurate Fishing Logs

I'll tag one of our newest members, @Leftover40 , so he sees why the recommendation from @george about keeping accurate and detailed log books is so important...

OK, we have guests coming today and one of them, a true newbie, and an absolute Captain Horatio Lunchblower, wants to catch some stripers. The stripers of late have been "DAs", very trying, and with the AM top of the tide situation, the worst possible tide, I needed to find a place that was totally protected from waves, has good action, while casting distance and accuracy is not important. I know, quite a shopping list, but I knew my logs would guide me...

As I was thinking I said to myself, "Isn't the local cove, Xxxx Cove, a great mid-September spot? Last night I went back over my logs from the past 3 years and sure enough, very consistent, almost stupid fishing there at high tide. OK, I'll try Wednesday morning by myself to check things out.

It was rainy and very windy this AM at dawn, so I waited until the rain dropped off and hit it at 07:00. Motoring to the spot was flat as a pancake, so no danger of chumming, although the water was very rippled. First couple of casts were ignored and I started wondering, but on cast 3, I thought there was a subtle swirl from a fish. On the 4th cast I had an out and out swirl and I spent the next hour trying to convince reticent fish to really hit the plug and take a bigger bite than one that just ends up with a lip hook. Ended the 1 hour feeding time with 8 fish from 20 - 25", great fun, dropped another dozen or so, and IDing a very promising spot for tomorrow with Captain H L-B...

Maintaining accurate records and analyzing the data offered over the course of a number of seasons will definitely improve your odds at catching fish consistently. It is a major reason why the old adage about 10% of the fisherman catching 90% of the fish is true. Well worth the investment in time.
