Is there a herring run on the East End?

Without getting into specifics on locations, just curious. I've fished the North Fork for a few years now, and I've had all kinds of fun chasing the usual suspects. I've even pulled out the old car batteries and squid jigs and had a go. Not to fill a bucket or because of the thrill of landing a squid, but just to get some exercise and have some fun outdoors.

I've never tried for herring out east though, that's something I've reserved for NYC and the western south shore or sound. Anyone out east know if herring is doable from shore, and if so, what time of year they typically pop up?

Yes they're here. :)
You can find them all along the coast.
The trick is, you need to find them.
Sometimes you can get a visual and
sometimes you can't. A majority of
these baits start to make a migratory
move in April, Menhaden (bunker)
Boston Mackerel and
Herring. One
goes one way and the other heads
another.

Thanks Chunkster! I have to dust off the sabiki rigs and give it a shot. Last time I was out for a drive I figured I'd take a few casts just for kicks, and came back with a few miniature black sea bass. I probably need to look for some visual signs of herring before I have a go at it.
