I've closed the books on Roccus Striper Fishing 2022 - Season Summary

Crazy fall schedule and tough boat maintenance schedule has me facing the reality that it's over for 2022 so I've closed the books tonight. 2022 was a spectacular year for me. The general trends.

  • Took less trips this year to the date, but only 8 less, 72 in 2021 vs 68 this year

  • Have not caught as many fish as last year, something I knew since I had very few double digit days this year, but the catch per trip to this date were close 5.68 fish per trip in 2021 with 5.47 this year.

  • Fish DEFINITELY bigger this year. Got my Maine PB of 34.5". This year's average size of 23.23" and Median of 23" are both 2" larger than last year's 21" figures. Also very few fish less than 20" caught this year. That is NOT good for the future. Histogram shown down below.

  • Never had to worry about getting a fish for the table this year. Prior to 2021 I only averaged 3 or 4, 28"+ fish. In 2021 I though I done died and gone to Valhalla with 21 "Keepahs". Well this year was nuts, in that the boat had 42 slot fish, 37 of which were boated by yours truly. Of those 42 fish, 28 were sent back to make more babies for the future.
Hope all of you continue to enjoy this season and keep us all informed of your continued fishy adventures...

This is why you keep logs. The boat still in the shop, but a colleague called with the "Where should I fish today?" request. I said, "Hmmm early September with a morning high tide. Peloton your kayak up into Dingbat Cove and you'll find the fish!"

He sent me this video. Not sure if I should be glad or miffed...

As usual, you are the master statistician Roccus. Excellent record keeping will almost always yield better results for the savvy fisherman who studies and properly interprets the data.

So, great job in 2022. If you did not have to cut the season short, I have a feeling you would have exceeded your 2021 totals this year. BTW, on average, how long does the Striper season actually last in your area? Since Sandy, the North Fork has lost much of its fall run. Before then, in the Orient area we used to reliably catch Bass right through Thanksgiving. Now if we still see any Bass action in the fall it typically wanes by the middle of October. Frustrating sine I know the Montauk and South Shore guys still have a decent and prolonged fall run.

Latest I've ever landed a bass was Oct 7. I consider every October bass a gift from Poseidon and once I go 2 consecutive serious outings without a fish, I call it. Some more hard core colleagues will catch the occasional fish until mid-Oct.

Back in the Saddle!! :)

Went off to the Midwest for 3 weeks on Sept 1. Since getting back home on Monday, I've been faced with a lawn that grew on steroids, a still "waiting for a part" boat, and horrid wind, weather and tides. This evening was the first that I had a conducive tide near dusk, and the ability to fish off of a neighbor's dock.

Got down there around 16:00 and was met with a light chop, clouds/drizzle (weathermen strike out again) and a loon popping up and down in the water. At least I was comforted knowing I wasn't the only loon out there...

Fished for 20 min and was getting ready to pack it in when I saw a break, close to where the loon was. Hmmmm, do I keep fishing or pack it in, especially considering that loon just popped up relatively close to that break??? Well you can guess what I decided...

Three casts later, BANG!! A fish grabbed my popper with minimal surface disturbance, and after a tepid headshake, and after it took off on a series of spirited long runs I landed a "close, but no cigar" 27" fish.

Well I kept at it until 18:00, which was after the tide change. Just about every 15 casts, a fish would come up and slap at my popper. The total for the evening was 15 fish attacking my plug, 7 making contact, 5 getting hooked and 4 landed, 2 @ 23", a 25", and a 27". It was nice evening after a fishing lull of over 1 month.

Well done, Roccus. Sounds to me like the book is still open on 2022. I bet you can squeeze out just a few more Bass before Mother Nature brings the curtain down! My money is on you!!!
