Jamaica Bay Tradition

Got out with the crew for our annual spring jaunt to NYC. Jamaica Bay the weekend after Mother's Day was when and how our fishing team was formed over a decade ago, and we honor that tradition by returning every year, even after "Captain Kayak" Jerry Collins stepped back from organizing a massive kayak fishing tournament there.

We worked The Pumpkin Patch from two different directions: The guys launched from the east and drifted southwest during outgoing. I launched from Canarsie and traveled southeast to meet them. By the time we all arrived, they were telling me about huge bass mixed in with the rats in 3 feet of water. Meanwhile I'd been picking at bass that were all around 24 inches. When the tide started to run, blues invaded and everyone was catching 24 inchers. Pete was using sandworms and caught more, but no bigger. Small (4' deep) swimmers were also very effective. The big boys eluded us, but everyone had a tale to tell afterward.
